The contemporary secular vision of retirement is essentially a gilded cage - a permanent vacation defined by consumption, leisure, and a slow withdrawal from meaningful contribution. We are conditioned to believe that the "Golden Years" are a reward for decades of labor, intended to be spent on golf courses, cruise ships, or in front of the television. However, for the person of faith, this version of retirement is a spiritual trap that leads to listlessness, depression, and a loss of identity. The Bible knows nothing of a "retirement" from the work of the Kingdom; while your career may end, your calling is eternal. In fact, this season of life is a massive strategic advantage for the Church. You finally possess the three things the Kingdom needs most: time, wisdom, and a perspective that has been seasoned by decades of seeing God’s faithfulness. Retirement shouldn't be a "fading out," but a "re-firing" - a transition into your most significant season of service where you move from seeking "success" to seeking "significance."
